Dr. Rafael Yuste is a Spanish neurobiologist based in the United States, renowned for his groundbreaking work in neuroscience. Born on April 25, 1963, in Madrid, he studied medicine at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He later moved to the United States for his PhD at Rockefeller University, where he developed the calcium imaging technique, a pivotal method for visualizing neuronal activity.
Yuste is a professor at Columbia University, co-director of the Kavli Institute for Brain Science, and director of the NeuroTechnology Center. He is one of the main driving forces behind the BRAIN Initiative, a large-scale project aimed at mapping brain activity. His research has significantly advanced our understanding of neural circuits and brain function.
Throughout his career, Yuste has received numerous accolades, including the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award and the Eliasson Global Leadership Prize. He has published over 260 papers and has been cited more than 38,000 times, reflecting his profound impact on the field
