Dr. Jesús Martín-Fernández is one of the world leaders of awake neurosurgery for brain tumors, making significant contributions to the field of cognitive-emotional mapping. His research focuses on understanding and preserving cognitive functions during brain surgeries, as well as other complex scenarios such as as multilingual patients. Under the formation of Prof. Hugues Duffau, he uses the theory of complex dynamic systems to approach the context-sensitive cognitive functions that emerges from the brain as computational system. In 2023, he successfully performed the first awake brain surgery using an AI-based test to identify and preserve the patient’s emotions. This groundbreaking technique has been applied in multiple countries and is part of his broader efforts in cognitive neurocognitive surgery. Additionally, his research on the impact of different musical styles on brain activity has gained widespread attention, highlighting how various genres activate specific brain regions. Dr. Martín-Fernández continues to push the boundaries of neurosurgery by developing innovative methods to map and protect critical brain functions during surgery, ensuring better outcomes for patients worldwide.
