Ignacio Cirac is a theoretical physicist and one of the world’s leading pioneers in quantum information science and quantum computing. He is Director of the Theory Division at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Germany. Cirac’s groundbreaking work on quantum entanglement, trapped ions, and quantum simulation has laid key foundations for modern quantum technologies. In 1995, together with Peter Zoller, he proposed one of the first practical architectures for a quantum computer based on trapped ions, a milestone that helped launch the field of quantum computing. Cirac has received numerous international awards for his contributions to quantum physics and is widely recognized as a central figure in the development of quantum technologies.
